The staff at this charming boutique hotel on one of the Amsterdam canals was fantastic!   After an overnite flite from Detroit, we arrived at the airport at 5AM.  An Uber ride got us to Canal House Amsterdam by 6AM. Everything was dark inside.  A young gentleman answered the door after we rang the bell, ushered us in to the bar/waiting area, and made us comfortable.  Obviously, our room was not yet available.  He stowed our bags away, showed us the guest bathroom, and offered us coffee and espresso.  He was relieved later by a lovely woman who said of course the dining room was open to us for breakfast - a selection of breakfast meats, fruits and eggs-to-order from another very accommodating gentleman.  Refreshed, and rejuvenated we set out to explore the city.  By the time we returned around 3PM, our compact room was prepared, and we settled in.  There is no air conditioning unfortunately, and as the mid-September weather was still quite warm, the room was a bit uncomfortable.  A table fan had thoughtfully been provided, though.  The next evening we enjoyed the very pleasant garden area behind the former merchant's home, well-furnished with cushioned chairs.  There also was an attractive small building with chairs and tables for sitting.  That evening, the young man at the bar, recommended dinner at La Oliva, a tapas restaurant a few blocks away.  It was a fantastic suggestion! 
We highly recommend this beautifully appointed hotel: the staffs' friendliness and helpfulness were exceptional, the food and bar drinks were wonderful.

Romantic

It had been over 15 years since our last visit to Canal House and we wondered if it would have the same feel as during its heyday.  It is still a classy, top-drawer luxury hotel, although it felt a bit more impersonal than prior.  We were shown to a nice room overlooking the garden behind the hotel, which minimized any city noise.  They have added a very posh bar near the entry to the hotel, where check-in and check-out also occur.  Arriving late, the staff helped us get into a restaurant around the corner that was swamped for a light bite.  The breakfast was sumptuous served in an elegant and spacious tea room, where we met several other interesting guests.  The hotel sits on a canal in a central part of the city, making walking to many sites (including the Anne Frank house) easy.  Although pricey, we enjoyed our return stay.

A Return to Luxury on a Beautiful Canal

The most amazing hotel, in a beautiful setting, within close proximity to everything!!

We spent 2 nights here and I honestly didn't want to leave. The hotel is very boutique and decorated lovely. The rooms were amazing to.

We had booked a Good Room and it really was beautiful and had everything you need. The bed was unbelievably comfy and a lovely deep bath. Just want you want at the end of a long day walking, site seeing. 

The staff here couldn't help you more if they tried. They were so friendly and welcoming. We got their help with a restaurant that we had booked and was worried about. They recommended another one and it was beautiful. I wish I had got the names of the 2 ladies who helped us.

The location is also the best. It is within walking distance of everything. If you didn't want to walk, there is a tram stop a couple mins away. 

I cannot wait to return to this hotel. 

Best hotel, in the best location!

We had a very nice room on the second floor, but it was only accessible by an extremely steep staircase. This fact should be noted first! Breakfast can best be described as sparse and is not suitable for such a house. Apart from coffee and tea, there is nothing warm. The staff were always friendly and hardworking, even if they were partly uninformed. Unfortunately, the overall price-performance ratio is not correct.

Unfortunately, a beautiful building alone is not everything!

Staying in this beautiful property is a special experience, you feel like a nobleman of another era living in your home. It is located in a very romantic location, in front of one of the 4 main canals of the city with easy access everywhere. The staff is very polite, took great care of us and responded to our every need. The breakfast offered is of exceptional quality, it is all the more reason to wake up in the morning to the superb smell of croissants baking in the kitchen next to the dining table.

feel like home!

My girlfriend and I came to visit Amsterdam for 3 days. The hotel is 10-15mn away from the train station by foot which is great! We had a very warm welcome from a lady who studied hospitality in Holland (we do not remember her name unfortunately...).
The hotel is well located, the room was very very good even though we felt a marginal lack of space inside our room. The sound isolation is not goof tough, which can lead you to unwanted noises.
The entire staff was lovely, particularly Chad (or Tchad) who was very kind to us, and made us two very refreshing gin tonic after our diner.
We just found the hotel a bit expansive, especially as the breakfast was not exactly at the level of the hotel.
Anyhow, we had a wonderful stay, thank you very much, we really enjoyed our stay in your hotel :)

Cosy place full of charm

Canal House is, as the name suggests, on the canal and it is a house. Right in the middle of the canal district in fact close to all the places you might want to go and for me, five minutes from a meeting I had in the morning and hence the stay.

It is deceptively spacious, and after a very friendly greeting (and complimentary ginger tea) I was shown to my room which was nice and big and overlooked the garden, and in turn was overlooked by the blocks of flats opposite and hence the curtains were closed pronto. There was a separate loo and wardrobe, while the bath/shower was in the room and adjacent to one of the walls. The lights were a mystery but eventually I found the right switches and the aircon worked well. The bed was big and soft and very comfortable and I slept well although I was woken on a regular basis by the chiming of bells close by. Then again, if you choose to stay in the centre of a city, city sounds such as chiming bells shouldn't be a surprise. There was a TV, a minibar, a towel robe, and the smallest pair of slippers I had ever encountered into which I could just about fit my big toe. Wifi was great.

Any gripes? Well the hotel is not really for business travellers such as I was. It was too "designed" whereas all I really wanted or needed was more efficiency (eg the lights). The wash basins (in the room also) were stand alone on a wooden cabinet while the teeny tiny soap provided was placed carefully on a small two-inch square flat china plate beside them. It all looked great but it was not easy to put back the wet soap on the china plate after washing your hands. The shower was good and the water hot. There were big bottles of no doubt very chi-chi bathroom product on the side which, had you chosen to stick one of them in your bag to keep, the hotel would have charged you for. Which is fair enough.

Breakfast was a help yourself continental affair with a surprising lack of juices: orange, something else and strawberry (!). There was one loaf of bread, no toaster and no orange marmalade (apricot only). I asked for the bread to be toasted and when it (finally!) returned, it had been warmed up only. I sent it back and it returned a bit warmer but was not recognisably toast even then. Coffee was fine. People were ordering stuff off the menu but I didn't try anything else.

So in conclusion, a great, very elegant and stylish and friendly hotel to base yourself in to explore and enjoy Amsterdam on holiday, there were some really nice touches (the welcome shot of tea, a pot of bathroom essentials including toothbrushes in case you'd forgotten yours) but it was not really a business hotel which, it must be said, it never said it was.

We just wrapped up a 10 day stay at the Canal House so I feel fairly confident in my assessment of it.  We sprang for the executive double room as it was a special occasion, so my experience is with a more spacious room.  Rooms in Amsterdam tend to be smaller just because space in the city is such a premium, so it’s important to check the square footage when booking regardless of the hotel.  For its part, our room was huge and luxurious, and not overly expensive compared to rooms with comparable space and amenities.

As far as location goes, I’m convinced this hotel is located in absolutely the perfect spot to stay in the city.  It’s in the middle of the scenic and historic canal belt, right by the West Church and the Anne Frank House and on the edge of the charming Jordaan detract, which is full of nice shops, restaurants, and bars.  It’s removed enough to be free of the tourist-infested chaos of Dam Square and the Red Light District, but central enough that it’s within easy walking distance of both.  Walking out of the hotel every morning is picturesque, and you have a few streets of quiet serenity before diving into the bustle of Amsterdam.

The hotel itself is a work of art, with a bold and unified design aesthetic that I’d love to see more of.  Everything down to the pencils provided in the room follow the black and purple scheme, and the decor is slick, chic, and periodically accentuated with floral flourishes.  It really does feel like a passion project.  The central courtyard is a nice quiet place to read a book or have a drink, the complimentary breakfast is generous and excellent, and the beds might be the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in.

The staff was extremely welcoming, kind, and helpful.  They handled reservations for us, were full of knowledge and recommendations, and were prompt and attentive in housekeeping.   When issues (all unrelated to the hotel) came up, or when we stumbled in after a few more drinks than we really needed in hindsight, they were always patient and gracious.  It should go without staying, but be kind to the staff, they deserve it.

Overall this was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had.  If you’re looking to go the extra mile to make your stay in Amsterdam really special, you couldn’t do better.

A beautiful hotel in a beautiful spot

A big plus point of this hotel is its location, as you can easily walk from here to all the important sights. But you should not choose the cheaper room category, because these rooms are really tiny, and the bathroom is part of the bedroom. After all, there is a mini cabin for the toilet. The choice for breakfast is very manageable, and I found it a little strange that the service that took us to order the drinks said I could get my juice from the coffee shop. Service? Well, it's also super understandable, because the car is parked outside the old town and it's not going to have to come extra.
