We were stopping locally and having looked at their website thought we would pop in for  something to eat on the way back to our cottage. As they serve food until 8.00pm we thought we would be OK at 6.45pm but unfortunately as they had been so quiet the chef had gone home which was disappointing but in the current climate perfectly understandable. The guy behind the bar was really apologetic and polite, we just had a drink and left saying we were intending to return the following evening (Friday) which we did. Oh boy, what a change! We arrived at about 6.30pm, there were two customers in the place when we went to the bar (different staff)  - 
"Good evening, are you serving food" I enquire
"Have you booked?" came the reply
"Do we need to?" I asked.
"We have a table of eight booked for later" (there are 20-30 covers) "I`ll see what chef says". Returns to say we can eat "as long as we are quick"....
Food was OK, not spectacular but reasonably priced, beer was again OK (Fyne Brewery), but the place is generally run down and in more than a lick of paint.

I don`t like leaving such a negative review as I appreciate how difficult the hospitality sector is having things at this time, and how important it is for the small commuities to have these places available to meet and socialise, but based upon our Friday evening experience I won`t be returning if we go back to the area. We just felt like our being there was an encumbrance they would be happy to without.

Lovely spot, but the rest........

Rori and Christine were amazingly hospitable!   Drinks in the Pub with Rori and the other guests at night, and breakfast with Christine, in the morning, will never be forgotten!  I shall return! Thank you Rori and Christine!

Avoid room 10, read all the poor reviews as they are correct and stay somewhere else.

Room 10 has condensation mould on the bathroom ceiling, cobwebs on the velux window, stains on the carpet and chair upholstery.

The property is tired and run down.

I would not stay again as it is the worst hotel I have ever stayed, if we’d had our sleeping bags we would have slept in the car.

Outstanding..in every department. Rooms fine and dandy, some great beers, fabulous food and such attentive and helpful staff . Perfect combo thank you guys..only irritation is having to expand this review to 200 words when I’ve said exactly what I want to say with 130!!

The hotel has seen better days, it had a weird smell in the room and just didn't really feel that clean. I'm sure with the proper investment this hotel could be better but sadly it appears the years haven't been kind. The outside location of the hotel is nice

Could be better

Gorgeous location on the Crinan Canal - perfect for canal walks.  We booked a double room with large ensuite which was in the old part of the building overlooking the canal.  The room was very generous in size and both the bathroom, room, sheets and towels were spotlessly clean - mattress very comfortable.  We had dinner in the bar area and, although the menu was limited due to the time of year, enjoyed it.   The cooked full Scottish breakfast was excellent, as was the unlimited coffee.  Staff were lovely and helpful in every way - they happily filled a flask with boiling water for our onward trip the next day and arranged for us to have a very early breakfast.

We stayed three nights. The most uncomfortable bed that we have slept in for years. The pillows and quilt were very rubbery. The bathroom had mould on the tiling grout, and areas of the walls had been filled, but not painted. However, the room was clean.
We complained about the bed and asked for another room, but was told that they were full, but they did say they would give a discount. We mentioned the bed again when we paid the bill, but no discount was given. We didn't want to spoil our holiday, so paid up and left.

Good food, terrible bed

I am writing an honest review on a 2 night stay I had earlier this month. Speechless tbh. The photos of place look amazing but don't be fouled. See my pics. The food was awful which bar staff told me they only get good reviews about their food. First night food was left as it was inedible and second night food was bland. Waiting staff did not have a clue how to give any good customer service. Hands in pockets and forgetting cutlery. The dining area looks like it's falling down from inside and out. See pics. Our food came separate so partner ate their first and ten mins after I finally got mine. Staff are unhelpful and when complained about meal was unhelpful. The one nice staff was the women on reception which was lucky if u ever find her as she wasnt at post all the time. The room stank of damp as did the whole hotel. The damp in room did wonders for my asthma! The price of 131 pounds per night is shocking. I could stay in the top hilton for that price! The only good thing was the location. Peaceful and quiet for a couples getaway. Will certainly not be returning!

Avoid

We visited for dinner, we did not stay.  On arrival the furniture and decor makes you think Blackpool sea front 3* and have you made a mistake.  But the food is delicious and the service brilliant.   The twice baked cheddar and chive souffle is worth travelling miles for. Beef and Mushroom stroganoff and gammon steak also excellent. Would definitely return. 

A revelation 

The hotel restaurant and bar is an absolute gem. The staff member was an absolute trooper considering she was on her own, she facilitated our requests, never got flustered and was the perfect level of attentive at service. 

The food is exceptional, with a good standard menu and a huge selection of specials.

All in all this is an absolute gem and well worth stopping half way through the canal.
